Getting Started With Your BlackVue Dash Cam: Part 3
A How‑to Guide: Supercharging Your BlackVue With Cloud Connectivity
If you have already worked through Part One and Part Two of our Getting Started series, you are ready to take your BlackVue dash cam to the next level. In Part Two, we explored advanced dash cam settings in the BlackVue app to fine-tune your setup so your camera behaves exactly the way you want, both on the road and in parking mode.
In Part Three, we shift the focus to one of the most powerful features on our latest models: BlackVue Cloud. In this video guide, we walk through how to connect your dash cam to BlackVue Cloud and highlight two standout features, live notifications and auto upload, with Remote Live View and playback as additional tools we can rely on whenever we need instant access to our dash cam footage.
What Is BlackVue Cloud and Why Does It Matter
When setting up BlackVue Cloud for your dash cam, it is important to understand that Wi Fi and Cloud are not the same thing. Wi-Fi is a short-range, direct connection between your phone and your dash cam, which only works when you are physically near the vehicle. Once you walk away, that connection ends.
As the video highlights, BlackVue Cloud works differently. When your dash cam is connected to the internet and powered on, it can communicate with your phone remotely through the BlackVue app. That means you can receive alerts, check footage and see what is happening around your car without needing to return to it first. Low-resolution versions of your event footage upload automatically, so you have more time to review and save key moments in high resolution.
Key features of BlackVue Cloud
- Remote Live View: Check on your car from anywhere by streaming a real-time feed from your BlackVue Cloud-connected dash cam, and switch seamlessly between the front, rear or interior cameras whenever you need to.
- Push notifications: Receive an instant alert on your phone when an impact or event is detected, accompanied by a snapshot.Â
- Video backup: Securely back up key dash cam footage to your BlackVue Cloud by saving a single video or selecting multiple clips for bulk upload. Any video you download to your phone via the BlackVue app can then be accessed and shared directly from your phone.
- Remote Video Playback: While your BlackVue cannot prevent every incident, it gives you a strong chance of capturing the crucial dash cam footage needed to help protect you and your vehicle. With BlackVue Cloud’s Remote Video Playback feature, you can browse and play back videos recorded by your dash cam directly from your mobile phone whenever you need them.
- 4G LTE Module (Optional): The BlackVue CM100GLTE 4G LTE module connects to a compatible BlackVue dash cam via its USB port, giving your camera its own mobile data connection and enabling full BlackVue Cloud functionality.
Together, these features help turn your BlackVue dash cam into a fully connected, reliable security solution for your vehicle.
Step-by-step Setup
Getting started with BlackVue Cloud is straightforward once your dash cam is connected to Wi-Fi, and our video walks you through each stage in real time. For your convenience, we have also outlined the key steps below:
Step 1: Choose how your dash cam will connect to the internet
There are two main ways to connect your dash cam to the internet. The first is to use the BlackVue LTE connectivity module, which plugs directly into the USB port of compatible models and gives the camera its own data connection. The second is to use a third-party Wi-Fi hotspot, such as a portable modem or an in-car router.
If you choose a third‑party hotspot, both placement and power are crucial because if the hotspot loses signal or switches off, BlackVue Cloud features will stop working until the connection is restored. The BlackVue LTE connectivity module is often the preferred way to use BlackVue Cloud because it draws power directly from the dash cam via its USB port and automatically turns on and off with the camera, so it can keep Cloud functions available in Parking Mode without needing a separate powered device. Because the module adds additional power draw, it may modestly reduce total Parking Mode operating time and slightly increase battery usage over the long term, especially when the system runs from the vehicle’s main battery.
Step 2: Choose your SIM and data setup
Once you have established your dash cam’s internet connection, for most models, you can connect up to three hotspots and set regular connection points, such as your home or work Wi- Fi, so your dash cam automatically uses those networks when parked in familiar locations. This helps minimise mobile data usage while still keeping BlackVue Cloud features available when you need them.
For SIM-based setups, most drivers use a data-sharing SIM from their existing mobile plan. BlackVue Cloud uses relatively low amounts of data for general use, while using higher amounts when you frequently use live view or download large amounts of footage. Because coverage and data limits vary between providers, it is a good idea to choose a plan that suits where you typically drive and how often you plan to access your dash cam footage through BlackVue Cloud.
Step 3: Connect your camera to the BlackVue app
Open the BlackVue app, select More, then select Cloud connection settings. Open the BlackVue app and tap the box under the dash cam name labelled “Add BlackVue Cloud features.” Then select More, followed by Cloud connection settings, and follow the prompts provided to register your dash cam. Follow the prompts to register your dash cam. Once the connection has been established, a blue cloud icon will appear next to your camera, confirming that your dash cam is now online.
Step 4: Choose the BlackVue Cloud plan that suits you
BlackVue Cloud offers a range of plans so you can tailor the service to how you use your vehicle. Our free plan enables essential features such as push notifications and live access to your dash cam.
For drivers who need more advanced features, our higher‑tier plans provide longer cloud storage for event files, extended live view sessions and support for multiple cameras. We also offer dedicated business plans with PC web viewer access and email notifications, making them ideal for managing multiple vehicles and drivers from a single platform.
FAQs
Q: What is the difference between Wi-Fi and BlackVue Cloud?
A: Wi‑Fi is a direct, short‑range connection between your phone and dash cam that works only when you are close to the vehicle, usually within a few metres. It is ideal for quickly changing settings, checking the live view or downloading recent clips while you are parked nearby. BlackVue Cloud, on the other hand, works over the internet and allows your dash cam to communicate with your phone from virtually anywhere, so you can receive alerts, view live video and access recordings even when you are far away from your car.
Q: How does my dash cam connect to BlackVue Cloud?
A: To connect to BlackVue Cloud, your dash cam needs a continuous internet connection. This can be provided by the dedicated BlackVue LTE connectivity module, which plugs into your dash cam and uses a mobile data SIM, or by a third‑party Wi‑Fi hotspot such as an in‑car router or a portable hotspot. Once the dash cam has internet access and you have linked it to your BlackVue account in the app, it can send notifications, upload important events and respond to remote commands via the Cloud.
Q: Does BlackVue Cloud use much data?
A: Data usage is generally modest for routine functions such as status updates, push notifications and automatic uploads of short event clips, as these features are designed to use data efficiently rather than consume your allowance quickly. For typical personal use, a mobile data plan in the range of about 5-10 GB per month is generally recommended, though actual usage will vary depending on how often you access Cloud features. However, data usage can increase if you frequently use Remote Live View, continuously stream video, or manually download long or high‑resolution recordings over the Cloud, so it is a good idea to monitor your data plan and adjust your habits or video quality settings if needed.
Q: Can I use BlackVue Cloud in parking mode?
A: Yes, you can use BlackVue Cloud while your vehicle is parked, provided that both the dash cam and its internet source remain powered. This allows your camera to send instant alerts and upload key event clips if it detects motion or an impact in parking mode, giving you visibility of what happens around your car while you are away. Because it can supply both stable power and mobile data without relying on external Wi‑Fi, the BlackVue LTE connectivity module is often the preferred solution for reliable Cloud access in parking mode.
Q: Is there a free BlackVue Cloud plan?
A: Yes. BlackVue Cloud includes a free plan that provides core features such as basic live access, push notifications and limited event uploads, which is often enough for occasional users. If you need more storage, more frequent remote access or support for multiple cameras, you can upgrade to one of the paid plans, which increase cloud retention, extend live view sessions and add extra features tailored to power users and business fleets.
